Today I have Renee Novelle here for a Q&A and a giveawaygraydivider_thumb_thumb_thumb
The Boyfriend List by R.S. Novelle
Publication date: February 10th 2014
Genres: New Adult, RomanceBoyfriendList
Summary:
The Boyfriend List follows twenty-year-old Reagan in her quest for the perfect relationship after a somewhat tragic spring break breakup leaves her disillusioned about love again.
Reagan had always prided herself on making levelheaded, practical, analytical decisions about everything. Everything, that is, except where guys are concerned. Which was proven to her, once again, when her boyfriend opts to take another girl on their oh-so-romantic trip to his lake house. In order to prevent future heartbreak, she creates a checklist of all the qualities she wants in a man, and vows not to give her heart away again until she can determine if they fit every last criteria.
After scouring campus with her two best friends in her tricky journey, her detective work returns a pile of unworthy rejects, and it seems as though her choices are narrowed down to only two options: the hot stranger whos inspired her new project, and her best guy friend Ian, who shes always kept at bay due to his perceived playboy reputation.
Reagan gets more than she bargained for with her new set of rules, however, and is surprised to find that love, and the perfect boyfriend, may have been within reach the entire time. But will Ians reputation ruin his chances to prove his worth? And can Reagan let go of her insecurities long enough to even give him a chance?
The Boyfriend List is a light, New Adult romance about friendship, trust, and learning to let go in order to embrace what real love can offer
Interview
Where are you from originally?
Originally I was born in the tiny little town of Ashland, Kentucky. But we moved pretty quickly, and I grew up almost all of my life in Gainesville, Florida (Go Gators!). Living in a city that kind of revolves around the college there, and is comprised of mostly college students gave me some great material for my upcoming New Adult stories.
Tell us your latest news?

Im so, so excited to have just released my first New Adult romance! I had so much fun writing this book, and I really hope that readers will be able to connect with the characters. I had originally planned it as a single title, but Ive received so many requests asking for more of Reagan and Ian that Ive decided to turn it into a trilogy! Im really excited to explore the next step in their journey together.

Where do you get your ideas?

It depends on what genre Im writing in. Sometimes they come from real life events and experiences. Other times theyre inspired by pieces of a news story Ive heard or something in the community. But lately my muse likes to drop them into my head at 3am while Im trying to sleep.

What is your writing process?
I generally tend to think of the title first (I work backwards like that), and then form the general concept of the story around that. I sit on this for weeks, months, even years in some instances until I feel like I know the story and characters well enough to plot the whole thing out. After writing a detailed outline, I start the first draft and edit as I go. Then I give it one or two more edits before passing it on to my proof readers/beta readers. I tend to write quickly, so once I have an outline and commit to writing a story, I usually have it done in 2-3 months.

Are any of your characters based on real-life friends or acquaintances?

I think I pull aspects of personalities from my real-life friends, but there isnt a character that is completely someone I know. I based a lot of Ians characteristics, the way he loves and his attentiveness to those he cares about, around the person Im in love with. Theyre very much alike in that regard. And Ive had friends like Petra in the past who are so outgoing and confident in every situation.

Do you ever incorporate yourself into your characters?

Absolutely! I think as a writer its hard not to. You want the characters to be relatable and feel real, so Im constantly giving them my own insecurities and strengths, and relying on my own experiences to portray a particular moment. But even more than that, I often find that my characters are enjoying my favourite type of coffee or tea, or that the color nail polish that Im wearing as I write a scene is the color theyre wearing as well.

Tell us about your cover. Did you design it yourself and if you did where did you get the inspiration?

I designed the overall concept and feel of the cover, but I worked very closely with a professional graphic artist to bring it all together. I understand my limitations, and I think its very beneficial to utilize professionals whenever possible. And I enjoy the collaboration of working with someone else, bouncing ideas off each other and watching the process of the image coming to life.
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee!!! I live for caffeine. But a nice cup of tea helps me unwind after a long day of writing.
What do you do outside of writing?
I also still write as a freelance journalist for magazines. But when Im NOT writing, I enjoy the beach, going to concerts or musicals, trying a new restaurant, or exploring a new city. Since I spend so much time at my desk, I really enjoy activities that will get me outside and active.

Interview_thumb1_thumb1

1. Describe WAKEWORLD in a tweet (140 characters or less)

Locked into Wakeworld by a power hungry dragon, Vivian joins forces with a rogue dreamshifter to rescue her lover and save the dream worlds

2. What is the hardest part about writing a second book in a series?

Expectations. Writing the first book, I was all safe and warm in my little writer coccoon with nobody to please but myself. When I went to write the second book this was no longer true. I had an editor to please, and readers who both loved and hated the first book. I didn't want to let anybody down and I was sort of frozen for a bit.

3. What do you think the key to good world building is?

I think I'm still growing into world building. The ultimate master is Tolkien, but he spent years and years developing Middle Earth and I don't have that kind of time and patience. It's really important to think about all of the senses when you're world building I think - how things look, and sound, and taste, and feel and smell. Plus paying some attention to things like politics and world history and mythology. Real worlds have a lot of depth to them and fantasy worlds need to have that too.

4. Which of your characters do you relate to the most and why?

Of all of my characters so far, that would be Jesse in the Dream Wars novellas. In the Books of the Between I somehow seem to relate to Zee and I'm not sure why. I certainly have nothing of the Warrior in me. Maybe it's the artist side of him I connect to.

5. Where do you get most of your inspiration for your books?

Inspiration comes from everywhere. Snatches of conversation, news stories, dreams, TV shows, other books. And often it just shows up from out of my subconscious and I have no idea where it actually came from.

6. What is something that we would be surprised to learn about Vivian?

She's a terrible cook. Something as simple as a grilled cheese sandwich tends to go badly.

7. If we were to have an author talent show, what would your talent be?

Oh dear. There was a time I could have played the piano for you, but I'm way out of practice. If you had an author talent show I'd probably run somewhere and hide.

Thanks so much for being here on  Book Briefs, Kerry!

Thank you so much for having me!

BEST KIND OF BROKEN - Cover
Pixie and Levi haven't spoken in nearly a year when they find themselves working?and living?at the same inn in the middle of nowhere. Once upon a time, they were childhood friends. But that was before everything went to hell. And now things are... awkward.

But now that they're forced to share a bathroom, and therefore a shower, keeping their distance from one another becomes less difficult than keeping their hands off each other. Welcome to the hallway of awkward tension and sexual frustration, folks. Get comfy. Its going to be a long summer.

Interview_thumb1
1) Describe Best Kind of Broken in a tweet (140 characters or less)
Two childhood friends, torn apart by tragedy, but after being forced to share a bathroom all summer, are brought back together by love.
2) What is it that attracted you to the New Adult genre?
The age group of the characters, mostly. I like stories about those lost years in between high school and real adulthood. The time in your life where you find your identity and make decisions about what you want to be and who you want to love. And the new adult genre is all about those pivotal years.
3. If I promise not to tell that you picked a "favorite", will you share which is your favorite character from all of your books?

Haha. I love this question! And I totally have an answer. The character I had the most fun writingand to this day makes me smile when I think about heris Heather from my Archers of Avalon series. Shes happy and annoying and snarky and I just love her to pieces. She reminds me a lot of myself, which could be a bad thing since shes a little crazy, but she was super entertaining to create and develop.
4. What are some trends in YA/NA that you are loving right now?
Ooh! Another great question! I really like plotlines that involve independent female characters that arent fragile or pure. I like tough girls, snarky girlsgirls that dont need a man, but want one anyway. ;)
5. What do you do when you have the dreaded writers block?
I throw on some music and go running. Running helps me think and music helps me create. J
6. What is something we would be surprised to learn about Levi?

As a handyman, he really hates fixing chandeliers. He thinks theyre gaudy and serve no purpose other than driving him crazy with their hundreds of tangled wires.
7. If we looked under your bed right now, what would we find?
Haha. A big fat scrapbook I made about my senior year of high school. (I attached a picture.) So nerdy, I know. But senior year was really fun for me so Im happy I have all those pictures and memories in one place as a reminder.

Interview
Welcome, Juliana! Your newest NA Contemporary Romance, Playing Pretend, has just released! How are you feeling?
Yay! Im excited and very nervous!
And scared. Im scared because my readers might think they are in for a book in the same style of Breaking the Reins and this isnt true. Playing Pretend is VERY different from Breaking the Reins. Playing Pretend is light and sweet and cute, while Breaking the Reins is deep and emotional and heartbreaking.
Even so, I hope readers enjoy Playing Pretend :)
Summarize Playing Pretend in one sentence.
In a game of playing pretend, girl falls for the wrong boy during spring break.
Describe the romancewhat can the readers expect?
Playing Pretend is a sweet, smexy book. With lots of sexual tension, and a tiny bit graphic. Just a tiny bit ;)
What inspired the idea behind the book?
Well, to be honest, I saw a publisher asking for a sweet spring romance, short novella length a couple of years ago. It didnt specify anything about spring break, but thats what came in my mind so I wrote it at once. However, I didnt send it out. I found it too short, and the end felt rushed, so I decided to hold on to it so some day when I had more time (I was working on another book at the time) I would rework and extend it.
Fast forward to mid 2013, an urge to go back to that story hit me hard, so I picked it up again.
What was the most challenging part of writing it?
To me writing is never the problem. What I actually have to force myself to do is to revise. I know its a VERY IMPORTANT and necessary evil, so I do it, but ugh, if I could, I would skip it.
What did you most enjoy while writing the book?
The sweet moments between Charlotte and Mason :)
Your favorite line (or scene) from Playing Pretend:
I cupped her cheek and kissed her. I was upset, yes, but nothing could keep me away from her during these last few hours. I wanted her. I needed her. And I showed her just how much when I deepened the kiss, threatening to break unspoken social rules of how to behave in public.
Are you currently writing another book?
Yes, Im writing Breaking Fences, which is a companion novel to Breaking the Reins. And when thats out with my editor, Ill work on The Everlasting Circle, book 3 of The Everlast Trilogy.
Besides writing, what other artistic talents do you have?
None.
Actually, dancing. I was a ballerina for a long time and won a few competitions here and there until I ruptured two tendons on my foot and cant use pointe shoes anymore :(
Best piece of advice you've received and give to aspiring authors?
Only one? Can I give a few? Lol
Know all the rules very well before breaking them. Never give up and never stop learning. Oh, and be humble, always!

Flash Q&A ...

Current Obsession:
Kpop. I love me some South Korean singers/dancers :)
Last thing you Googled:
stock photos for Breaking Fences cover.
Youre stressed. Whats the first thing you do or reach for?
I reach for anything that plays musicmy iphone, ipad, ipod, laptop, etcturn it on and let my mind wander through things I like or through ideas Im excited about.
You write best with __MUSIC AND COFFEE__ while __MY KIDS IS AT SCHOOL__ and in your __HOME OFFICE, WEARING YOGA PANTS__.
Inspiration hits, but you're not home or near your computer. You _____.
I reach into my purse and grab my notepad and pen.
Best writing resource:

Hm, eating too much chocolate? lol
