NA Review
The Making of Nebraska Brown by Louise Caiola
319 pages
Published Feb 2, 2014
Age Group: New Adulttmonb ebook cover
Source: ecopy from Author
The last thing eighteen-year-old Ann Leigh remembers is running from her boyfriend in a thick Nebraska cornfield. This morning shes staring down a cool Italian sunrise, an entire continent from the life she once knew. The events of the eighteen months in between have inexplicably gone missing from her memory.
All at once shes living with Tommy, an attractive, young foreigner asking for her continued love. Though hes vaguely familiar, she recalls a boy named Shane in America who she reluctantly agreed to marry. Juggling a new world while her old one is still M.I.A is difficult enough without the terrifying movie scenes spinning a dizzy loop in her mind: glimpses of a devastating house fire, a romance gone wrong, an unplanned pregnancy, and a fractured family each claiming to be part of who she once was a girl and a past somehow discarded.
Ann Leigh must collect the pieces of herself to become whole again, but she doesnt know who to trust especially when Tommys lies become too obvious to ignore. And above all, her heart aches to discover what became of the child she may or may not have given birth to.
The Making of Nebraska Brown tells the story of one girls coming apart from the inside and the great lengths shell go to reclaim herself and find her way home.
My Thoughts
The Making of Nebraska Brown is so unlike anything I have read in years! It is jarring and emotional, thought provoking, and intriguing in all the best ways possible. This is my second book that I have had the pleasure of reading by the talented Louise Caiola and my biggest takeaway is that both of her books have made me feel so many things.

Ana or Ann wakes up on the ground in the middle of Italy with no memory of how she got there. Last thing she remembers is being on a farm in Nebraska, which she finds out was 2 years ago. But then the story shifts once she makes her way back to what apparently is her house in Italy. The problem reverse and suddenly she can only remember things from her recent life as she experiencing them and she cant remember anything from her past. She doesnt know who to trust and she certainly doesnt know what happened to her. A ton of different theories flew around in my head, but I wasnt right about a single one of them.

I became so attached to Ana. Her thought process felt like my own. I trusted her instincts so much that if she didnt trust something or someone, I didnt trust them. I felt like I was living the story through her eyes. Louise Caiola has a wonderful talent of being able to transport you inside of her stories. I couldnt put The Making of Nebraska Brown down. (ha) I had to find out what the heck had happened to her.

I never fully trusted Tommy. I dont know why, but something just seemed off about him. I will say, that even though I was never completely on board with him. I kind of hoped for a little more from him at the end of the story. I wanted a little more resolution with that part.

The Making of Nebraska Brown is a fascinating mystery. It had to have been so scary and jarring for Ana to experience all of this. Not knowing what the heck was going on. Not knowing what was real and what wasnt. Having to question everything- even herself. I really felt for her. But not once did I think she was crazy. This book is like a super satisfying, albeit sometimes sad,  puzzle. Not everything is happy go lucky but it was still really satisfying to watch her finally start to put some pieces together and see her get closer to some answers. I cant say enough good things about how refreshing and well done this book is. Do yourself a favor and add this one to your TBR. You will be thanking me.

Finger Lickin Fifteen by Janet Evanovich
Genre: Adult comedy/mystery
Hardcover, 1st Edition, 308 pages
Published June 23rd 2009 by St. Martin's Press
Series: Stephanie Plum #15
Source: Audiobook from library

Unbuckle your belt and pull up a chair. It's the spiciest, sauciest, most rib-sticking Plum yet.

Receipe for disaster: Celebrity chef Stanley Chipolte comes to Trenton in a barbecue cookoff and loses his head - literally.
Throw in some spice: Bail bonds office worker Lula is witness to the crime, and the only one she'll talk to is Trenton cop Joe Morelli.
Pump up the heat: Chipotle's sponsor is offering a million-dollar reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the capture of the killers.
Stir the pot: Lula recruits bounty hunter Stephanie Plum to help find he killer and collect the moolah.
Add a secret ingredient: Stephanie Plum's Grandma Mazur. Enough said.
Bring to a boil: Stephanie Plum is working overtime tracking felons for the bonds office at night and snooping for security expert Carlos Manoso, aka Ranger, during the day. Can Stephanie hunt down two killers, a traitor, and five skips, keep her grandmother out of the sauce, and solve Ranger's problems and not jump his bones?
Warning: Habenero hot. So good you'll want seconds.

My Thoughts

The Stephanie Plum series is so much fun. It is one of those super long series that I know I can just pick up at any time, and I know that I will enjoy the story. The mystery is always interesting and the characters are a riot. I listened to this book on audio cd. It is the first book in the series that I have listened to the audiobook version of the story. I thought the narrator was great. I loved her voice of Lula, who is pretty much the star of this book. She never fails to crack me up.

The murder mystery in Finger Lickin' Fifteen is the death of Stanley Chipotle, a famous chef. So Lula and Stephanie go undercover (ha! yea right, like anyone in Trenton doesn't know who the two of them are by now)to enter the BBQ cook-off to try and solve the mystery. All of your favorite characters are back in this story and they are just as great as ever. I love the consistency in this series. You don't need to read each any every book to know what is going on. Each book is a contained mystery, but there are character subplots that flow throughout the series, so it is always a good idea to read them all in order.

Lula is hilarious in this story. I loved watching her try out different rib recipes. And seeing her with Stephanie's grandma is always a hoot and a half. This book made me laugh more times than I can count. Stephanie and Ranger, Lula and Joe Morelli are just such a winning combination. If you have not read this series yet, what are you waiting for? The romance and the mystery is a great combination. I listened to this book on a car trip with my boyfriend and his family and everyone loved it. His mom and dad, and his brother all thought it was funny. I don't think anyone in the car fell asleep, everyone was so interested in the story. Great addition to the series.

Adult Review
Beyond belief by Helen Smith
Release date: January 28th 2014
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer
Age Group: New Adult / Adultbeyondbeliefbookcover
Series: Emily Castles Mysteries #2
When famed psychic Perspicacious Peg predicts a murder will occur at Englands Belief and Beyond conference, her science-minded colleagues recruit twenty-six-year-old budding sleuth Emily Castles to attend the event as a future crimes investigator. The suspected victim: celebrated magician Edmund Zenon, who plans to perform a daring stunt at the conferenceand is offering fifty thousand pounds to any attendee who can prove that the paranormal exists.
In the seaside town of Torquay, Emily meets a colorful cast of characters: dramatic fortune-teller Madame Nova; kindly Bobby Blue Suit and his three psychic dachshunds; Sarah and Tim Taylor, devastated parents mourning their late son; and religious cult members Hilary, Trina, and the Colonel. Tensions rise as believers in science, the supernatural, and the spiritual clash with one another. But once a body count begins, Emily must excuse herself from the sances and positivity circles, and use old-fashioned detective work to find the killer.
Helen Smith is a member of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain, the Crime Writers Association and English PEN. She traveled the world when her daughter was small, doing all sorts of strange jobs to support them both--from cleaning motels to working as a magician's assistant--before returning to live in London where she wrote her first novel. Her work has been reviewed in The Times, the Guardian, The Independent, Time Out and the Times Literary Supplement. Her books have reached number one in the bestseller lists in the Kindle store on both sides of the Atlantic.
My Thoughts
I am a big fan of mysteries. Take that and add in the victim being a celebrated magician, and a big contest at the Belief and Beyond conference to anyone who can prove that the paranormal exists? How could I not read this book? Emily Castles is a young sleuth and she kind had a nancy drew vibe going on. Another huge plus for me. Beyond Belief, despite the fact that this is a serious murder mystery novel, it is actually surprisingly funny and was a very fun read. I know that sounds strange, but the mixture of the humor and the suspense of the mystery were an awesome combination for me. I loved this book. I couldn't guess the twists and turns and the story had me completely engrossed and on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Beyond Belief is the second book in the Emily Castles Mysteries series, but each book can be read as a standalone. I didn't read the first book in the mysteries series so I am not sure how much set up and background character information was given in the first book, but I never felt lost or out of plce while reading this story. The only thing I thought about was whether or not I would have gotten to know Emily Castle a little better through the first book. I feel like we did get to know her in this story well enough, but she was surrounded but such crazy and loud other characters that she seemed almost mousy in comparison. And I know that she wasn't someone that I would classify as mousy on her own. She is spunky and independent and very resourceful, but even with all of that, she still felt overshadowed by all of the "look at me" eccentric people around her.

I am now a fan of Helen Smith. I need to check out more of her books based on her writing in Beyond Belief. She is just so spot on with her descriptions. I found myself nodding along appreciatively when I could picture EXACTLY what she was describing. I just loved it. This book will have you laughing, and scratching your head right along with Emily trying to solve the case. Beyond Belief was a huge hit for me!
