Summary:

What if all the legends youve learned were wrong?
Brutally attacked by one god and unfairly cursed by another she faithfully served, Medusa has spent the last two thousand years living out her punishment on an enchanted isle in the Aegean Sea. A far cry from the monster legends depict, shes spent her time educating herself, gardening, and desperately trying to frighten away adventure seekers who occasionally end up, much to her dismay, as statues when they manage to catch her off guard. As time marches on without her, Medusa wishes for nothing more than to be given a second chance at a life stolen away at far too young an age.
But then comes a day when Hermes, one of the few friends she still has and the only deity she trusts, petitions the rest of the gods and goddesses to reverse the curse. Thus begins a journey toward healing and redemption, of reclaiming a life after tragedy, and of just how powerful friendship and love can bebecause sometimes, you have to sink in the deep end of the sea before you can rise back up again.

Interview

1. Describe The Deep End of the Sea in a Tweet (140 characters or less)

A formerly cursed ex-monsters journey to find herself.

2. I am a huge mythology fan. Do you have a favorite myth or god?

I am such a mythology junkie! For Greek legends, Medusas has always been one of my favorites, even though its sat wrong with me (which is why I decided to rewrite her ending). Outside of hers, the Norse myths about Ragnark have fascinated me. I love how nobody is safe in that one!

3. Which of your characters holds an extra special place in your heart?

From The Deep End of the Sea? It would definitely be the main characters, Medusa and HermesDusa because of her strength and huge heart, and Hermes because of his unwavering loyalty and ability to see beyond the surface. I love that theyre genuinely good people who try to make the world a better place.

4. What trends in YA are you loving right now?

I have to admit, I always gravitate toward urban fantasies. I love how contemporaries and fantasies can be smushed together to make something relatable yet rich for the imagination!

5. What do you think your character Hermes would do for Valentines Day?

Hmm . . . he would probably take Dusa to a small caf in Paris, a city shes always wanted to go to. He knows she gets overwhelmed in large crowds, so hed want it to be intimate and comfortable. And then hed give her a poem he struggled to write; to her, it would be the perfect gift.

6. What process do you go through when you are researching/planning a new book?

A lot of daydreaming comes firstthen a flurry of scenes that may or may not be in order followed immediately by the ending. I also build an inspiration board that overlooks my desk so I can see the characters and their locations. Once I have a feel for my characters and their journey, then Ill start my research and building of the in between scenes.

7. If we looked under your bed right now, what would we find?

Boxes and boxes of sweaters. Im not kidding. I think I have . . . maybe 6 different boxes filled with sweaters under there? That reminds me, I probably need to sort through and donate a ton of them that I no longer wear.

Thanks so much for being here today Heather!

Thanks so much for having me!
